What Protection Do You Need?
Wrist guards — the most important piece of protection for beginners. The most common skating injury is a wrist fracture from putting your hands down to break a fall — it's instinct that's nearly impossible to override. A wrist guard with a solid splint plate redirects that force. Non-negotiable for anyone learning to skate.
Knee pads — essential for beginners learning to fall safely, and for park and ramp skaters at any level. A good set of knee pads from 187 Killer Pads or ProTec lets you take falls on your knees rather than your hands, making recovery faster and confidence higher.
Helmets — required at most rinks and skate parks, and simply the smart call everywhere else. Look for multi-impact certified helmets (like the S1 Lifer) rather than single-impact options — skating involves repeated low-force impacts, not just one big crash.
Elbow pads — important for park and ramp skaters, and for anyone learning tricks. Often underestimated. An elbow impact on concrete at speed is genuinely serious.
