Why Your Order Confirmation Emails Might Be Going to Spam — And How to Fix It

If you've ever placed an order online and not received a confirmation email, or found it buried in your spam folder, there's a very specific reason — and it's completely fixable. This guide explains email authentication in plain English, why it matters for online shoppers, and what to check if SoCal Skates order emails aren't reaching your inbox.

What Is Email Authentication and Why Does It Matter?

Every email that travels from a shop's website to your inbox passes through a series of automated checks run by your email provider (Gmail, Outlook, Apple Mail etc.). These checks verify that the email actually came from who it claims to be from. If an email fails these checks, it gets routed to spam — or blocked entirely — regardless of whether the content is legitimate.

The three authentication protocols that matter for online store emails are SPF, DKIM, and DMARC. You don't need to understand the technical details to understand why they exist: they're essentially a way for your email provider to verify that the shop is who they say they are, and that their emails haven't been tampered with in transit.

Why This Affects Your Order Emails

When you place an order at SoCal Skates, our Shopify store automatically sends you a confirmation email from our domain (@socalskates.com.au). For that email to reach your inbox reliably, our domain needs to be properly authenticated against SPF, DKIM, and DMARC standards.

Gmail and Yahoo tightened their email authentication requirements significantly in 2024, meaning emails from domains without proper authentication now face much higher spam filtering rates. This is why some customers who've shopped at smaller online stores in recent years have found legitimate order emails going to spam.

Checking Your Inbox Effectively

If you've placed an order and haven't received a confirmation email within 5 minutes:

  1. Check your spam or junk folder first. Search for "SoCal" or "socalskates.com.au" — the email may have been filtered automatically.
  2. Check your promotions tab (Gmail users). Gmail sometimes routes transactional emails to Promotions rather than Primary. Order confirmations should always be in Primary — if they're landing in Promotions, mark them as Not Promotions to train your inbox.
  3. Add hello@socalskates.com.au to your contacts before you order. This is the single most effective thing you can do to ensure our emails reach your inbox — email providers almost never filter email from addresses in your contacts list.
  4. Check the email address you entered at checkout. It's surprisingly common to have a typo in the email field. If your order email isn't arriving, log into your account or use our contact page to check the address on file.

For Gmail Users: Preventing Promotions Filtering

Gmail's algorithm sorts incoming email into Primary, Social, and Promotions tabs. Order confirmations and shipping updates are transactional emails — they should land in Primary, not Promotions. If you find our emails going to Promotions:

  1. Open the email in Promotions.
  2. Drag it to the Primary tab.
  3. When Gmail asks if you want to do this for future emails from this sender, click Yes.

This trains Gmail's filter to route our emails correctly going forward.

For Apple Mail and iOS Users

iOS Mail can occasionally route transactional emails to the Unknown Senders list if the sender isn't in your contacts. Add hello@socalskates.com.au to your contacts and this should resolve it. In Mail settings, check that "Filter Unknown Senders" isn't enabled at a level that would capture legitimate store emails.

Setting Up a Dedicated Skate Email

If you do a lot of online shopping and want to keep your primary inbox clean, consider setting up a dedicated email address for online purchases. Services like Gmail allow you to create a secondary account and access it from the same app. This keeps your main inbox focused while ensuring you never miss a shipping update or order confirmation from any of the stores you buy from.
