How to Clean Your Roller Skate Bearings: Step-by-Step Guide

How to Clean Your Roller Skate Bearings

Bearings are small, simple, and often ignored until they're noticeably slow, grinding, or seized. Regular cleaning takes less than 30 minutes, costs almost nothing, and dramatically extends the life of your bearings. Here's exactly how to do it.

When Do Bearings Need Cleaning?

Clean your bearings when you notice any of the following: wheels spinning noticeably slower than usual, a grinding or crunching sound when you spin a wheel, resistance or roughness when you flick a wheel by hand, or visible grime and debris on the bearing shields.

As a general rule, skaters who skate outdoors regularly should clean bearings every 2–3 months. Indoor-only skaters can go longer. If you've skated through water or heavy grime, clean them soon after — water causes rust inside bearings faster than anything else.

What You Need

  • Skate tool or Allen key (to remove wheels)
  • Bearing removal tool or a bolt that fits the bearing core (to pop bearings out)
  • A small container with a lid (a jar or bearing cleaning kit)
  • Bearing cleaner (isopropyl alcohol or dedicated skate bearing cleaner)
  • Skate bearing lubricant (not WD-40 — more on this below)
  • Clean cloth or paper towel
  • Pin or safety pin (to remove rubber shields if needed)

Step-by-Step Process

1. Remove Your Wheels

Use your skate tool to remove the axle nuts and slide the wheels off each skate. Each wheel contains two bearings (one on each side), so 8 wheels = 16 bearings total.

2. Remove the Bearings from the Wheels

Use a bearing removal tool or the axle of your skate (angle the wheel and use leverage to pop the bearing out). Be careful not to damage the bearing casing. Remove both bearings from each wheel.

3. Remove the Shields (Optional but Recommended)

Most bearings have removable rubber shields held in place by a C-clip. Use a pin or safety pin to carefully lift the C-clip and remove it, then pull out the shield. This exposes the balls inside for a more thorough clean. Keep shields and clips in a small tray so you don't lose them.

4. Soak in Bearing Cleaner

Place bearings in your container, cover with bearing cleaner, seal the lid, and shake for 30–60 seconds. Empty the dirty solvent (it will be dark with grease and grit). Repeat with fresh cleaner until the solvent runs clear. Swirl bearings and spin them in the solution to dislodge debris from the ball tracks.

5. Dry Completely

This step matters. Shake off excess cleaner, then lay bearings on a clean cloth and let them air dry fully before lubricating. Spinning them helps speed up drying. Any remaining solvent will dilute your lubricant and reduce its effectiveness. Completely dry = 10–15 minutes of air drying.

6. Lubricate

Apply 1–2 drops of skate bearing lubricant to each bearing. Spin the bearing by hand to distribute the oil through the ball tracks. Don't over-lubricate — more oil is not better. Excess lube attracts dirt and makes bearings feel sluggish.

Do not use WD-40. WD-40 is a water displacer and solvent, not a lubricant. It will strip existing grease from bearings and leave them unprotected. Use dedicated skate bearing oil.

7. Replace Shields and Reinstall

Press the rubber shields back into the bearing and reseat the C-clip with your pin. Reinstall bearings into wheels (press firmly and evenly) and reattach wheels to your skates. Tighten axle nuts until the wheel spins freely but without lateral play.

Bearing Maintenance Tips

Avoid skating through puddles or wet surfaces where possible — water is the fastest way to rust bearings from the inside. If you do get caught in the wet, clean and dry bearings as soon as you can. Store skates in a dry location, not in a bag where moisture can accumulate.

Well-maintained bearings (Bones Reds or Swiss) can last years with regular cleaning. Neglected bearings in the same conditions might last months.

Bearing Upgrades

If your bearings are too far gone — seized, corroded, or beyond cleaning — replacement bearings are inexpensive. Bones Reds are the standard upgrade from stock bearings and make an immediately noticeable difference to your roll. Shop our full bearing range at SoCal Skates.
