Best Places to Roller Skate in Melbourne
Best Places to Roller Skate in Melbourne
Melbourne's roller skating scene is genuinely thriving. Between a growing number of dedicated rinks, excellent outdoor paths, and an active community of skaters, you've got more options now than at any point in the last decade. Here's where to go — broken down by what you're looking for.
Indoor Roller Skating Rinks in Melbourne
Roller One — Burwood
Roller One opened in 2025 inside Burwood One Shopping Centre and is Melbourne's newest dedicated roller skating venue. A premium indoor experience with sessions for all skill levels, skate hire available, and a great space for both regular skaters and first-timers. Located in Melbourne's east and well worth a visit if you're on that side of the city.
Rollerama — Caribbean Gardens, Scoresby
The OG Melbourne rink. Rollerama at Caribbean Gardens has been a Melbourne institution for decades and is still one of the best skating experiences in the city. Huge floor, great atmosphere, regular themed nights and events. If you've never been, put it on the list. Hire skates available.
Local Council Rinks and Pop-Up Events
Melbourne City Council and various inner-city councils occasionally run pop-up roller skating events, particularly in summer. MPavilion has hosted roller disco events. Keep an eye on community skating groups on Facebook for upcoming events — they get announced quickly and fill up fast.
Outdoor Skating in Melbourne
St Kilda Foreshore and Esplanade
The esplanade path along St Kilda beach is one of the best outdoor skating spots in Melbourne. Smooth path, great views, consistent traffic from other skaters, cyclists, and walkers. The Catani Gardens area near the carousel is a popular gathering point for roller skaters on weekends. Parking at the foreshore is manageable early in the morning before the crowds arrive.
Port Melbourne Foreshore (Princess Pier Area)
Port Melbourne has a strong local skating community — the Princess Pier skating meetups are a regular fixture. Smooth paths along the foreshore and a generally welcoming atmosphere. Good for both quad and inline skaters.
Yarra River Paths (South Bank and Southgate)
The Yarra River trail system is extensive and mostly smooth — ideal for fitness inline skaters who want to cover distance. The South Bank stretch from Federation Square toward the Domain is well-maintained and popular with commuter skaters. Rougher in sections as you move further from the CBD, but generally manageable on outdoor wheels.
Docklands Waterfront
The wide promenade areas around Docklands are excellent for skating — smooth, flat, and relatively uncrowded outside of event times. Good for beginners who want space to learn without heavy foot traffic.
Torquay and Surf Coast
If you're heading down to the coast, the Surf Coast Roller Skaters community is active in and around Torquay and Jan Juc. Skaters on the Surf Coast have built a genuine community around outdoor skating on the coastal paths — check the Surf Coast Roller Skaters Facebook group for meetups and skating locations.
Melbourne Skating Communities
The best way to find new spots and meet other skaters is through Melbourne's active Facebook and Instagram communities. Groups worth following:
- Melbourne Inline and Quad Skate Scene — the main hub for Melbourne skaters of both disciplines
- Skaters Let's Skate — Melb & Regional Vic — great for finding meetups and discovering new spots
- Melbourne Park Skaters — focused on skate park and transitions skating
- Surf Coast Roller Skaters — for those on the Geelong and Surf Coast side
